<p><b>Radama II</b>, né le <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/23_septembre" title="23 septembre">23 septembre</a> <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/1829" title="1829">1829</a> et décédé le <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/11_mai" title="11 mai">11 mai</a> <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/1863" title="1863">1863</a>, est un roi <a href="Madagascar.html" title="Madagascar">malgache</a>. Il règne sur le <a href="Royaume_de_Madagascar.html" title="Royaume de Madagascar">royaume de Madagascar</a> de <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/1861" title="1861">1861</a> à <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/1863" title="1863">1863</a>. Cette période est marquée par un revirement diplomatique vis-à-vis des Européens. Roi <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francophile" title="Francophile" class="mw-redirect">francophile</a>, il est néanmoins accusé de <span class="citation">« brader le pays »</span> et meurt assassiné par les tenants d'une politique plus indépendante.</p>

<p>Le <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/12_septembre" title="12 septembre">12 septembre</a> <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/1862" title="1862">1862</a>, après la disparition de sa mère, la reine <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranavalona_Ire" title="Ranavalona Ire">Ranavalona <abbr class="abbr" title="Première">I<sup>re</sup></abbr></a>
(survenue le 15 août 1861), le prince Rakoto est couronné roi sous le
nom de Radama II. Officiellement, il est considéré comme le fils de <a href="Radama_Ier.html" title="Radama Ier">Radama <abbr class="abbr" title="Premier">I<sup>er</sup></abbr></a>, mort en 1828, plus d'un an avant sa naissance. La rumeur attribue sa paternité au Premier ministre <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Andriamihaja&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Andriamihaja (page inexistante)">Andriamihaja</a>,
qui était également alors le compagnon attitré de sa mère. Il est
également reconnu roi de Madagascar par la signature d'un traité
d'amitié franco-malgache avec <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napol%C3%A9on_III" title="Napoléon III">Napoléon III</a> et ensuite, le <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royaume-Uni" title="Royaume-Uni">Royaume-Uni</a> et d'autres puissances européennes.</p>

<p>L'avènement de Radama II commença par soulever un immense espoir
parmi ses sujets, dont beaucoup étaient las des années de privation
marquant la dernière période du règne de Ranavalona, laquelle avait dû
se défendre de nombreux complots politiques. Fortement influencé par son
mentor, le Français <a href="Jean_Laborde.html" title="Jean Laborde">Jean Laborde</a>,
qui profite de son avènement pour revenir de son exil réunionnais au
titre de Consul de France, Radama II entreprend aussitôt d'abolir la <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peine_de_mort" title="Peine de mort">peine de mort</a> et décrète une amnistie générale. Il supprime les « corvées » (à savoir le <i>fanompoana</i>,
les travaux non rémunérés pour le compte de l'État et de la
collectivité), réduit la durée du service militaire et libère de
nombreux captifs.</p>

<p>Contrairement au monarque précédent, <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranavalona_I%C3%A8re" title="Ranavalona Ière" class="mw-redirect">Ranavalona <abbr class="abbr" title="Première">I<sup>re</sup></abbr></a>,
qui défendait l'idée d'un Madagascar indépendant et fier de ses
traditions, Radama II change complètement de cap. Il proclame la <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libert%C3%A9_de_culte" title="Liberté de culte" class="mw-redirect">liberté des cultes</a>
et ouvre sans restriction les portes du royaume aux Européens. Il veut
aussi abolir toutes les coutumes et les institutions traditionnelles,
estimant que seules celles des Européens portaient la marque de la
« civilisation ». Il s'habille d'ailleurs à la mode
européenne. Ces réformes libérales, en décalage avec les réalités du
pays, suscitent des troubles et de l'insécurité.</p>
<p>Profitant de son influence sur le jeune souverain, Jean Laborde fait signer par celui-ci une charte accordant à <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Lambert" title="Joseph Lambert">Joseph Lambert</a>, un aventurier français, un droit d'exploitation exclusif de toute la partie nord de Madagascar. Pour le Premier ministre <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainivoninahitriniony" title="Rainivoninahitriniony">Rainivoninahitriniony</a>
(ou Raharo) et les autres notables que Radama II n'avait pas consulté,
cette décision équivaut à brader aux puissances financières occidentales
(et au-delà, à l'État français dont les ambitions coloniales
s'affichaient ouvertement) les ressources de la moitié du territoire
national, tout en compromettant de manière irréversible l'indépendance
du pays.</p>

<p>Ils s'opposent donc au roi, auquel était reproché son indifférence aux affaires du royaume et ses amusements avec les <i>menamaso</i> (compagnons). Radama, contrairement aux usages, n'a pas constitué son entourage de personnes de castes nobles <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andriana" title="Andriana">andriana</a>,
il fréquente même des personnes de caste inférieure (mainty). Cette
proximité entraîne un soupçon de mixité sexuelle entre les menamaso
entraînant la corruption de la personne royale. Profitant alors d'une
crise ouverte avec un des chefs <i>menamaso</i>, que le roi proposa de
régler par un duel (« comme dans les pays civilisés ! »
ajouta-t-il), Ranivoninahitriniony se résout à éliminer tous les <i>menamaso</i>
et le 11 mai 1863, le roi lui-même est étranglé. Cela doit alors
permettre au gouvernement la dénonciation de la charte Lambert et
préservation de l'indépendance du pays.</p>

<p>Cette disparition brutale de Radama II suscite des troubles (des
révoltes éclatent, certaines conduites par des individus se prétendant
être Radama II lui-même, ayant échappé miraculeusement à son assassinat)
et ébranle en profondeur le système monarchique merina. Pour ne plus
laisser au souverain la possibilité de conduire les affaires du royaume
selon son bon plaisir, et parce qu'en réalité, depuis <a href="Andrianampoinimerina.html" title="Andrianampoinimerina">Andrianampoinimerina</a>, le pouvoir étatique merina repose sur l'équilibre entre le souverain, représentant les groupes <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andriana" title="Andriana">andriana</a> et le Premier ministre, représentant les <a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hova" title="Hova">Hova</a>, on met sur le trône la veuve (et cousine) de Radama II. Elle devient la reine <a href="Rasoherina.html" title="Rasoherina">Rasoherina</a>,
et épouse pour la circonstance le Premier ministre. Cette union à
signification avant tout politique et protocolaire sert de modèle aux
règnes suivants.</p>

<p>La mémoire de Radama II est honnie par l'historiographie merina traditionnelle pour qui il n'était plus que <i>Radama nanjaka tapany</i>,
celui qui n'a « régné qu'à moitié » en raison des
inconséquences et des circonstances dramatiques de son élimination. Le
corps même du roi est inhumé à la sauvette dans sa propriété d'<a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilafy" title="Ilafy">Ilafy</a>
et on efface son nom de la liste officielle des souverains. Cette
vision est largement demeurée celle des nationalistes modernes pour qui
Radama II était avant tout un roi traître à son propre pays, un
souverain faible et influençable, foncièrement incompétent et même,
passablement anarchiste. En revanche, les auteurs coloniaux tentèrent de
réhabiliter ce roi francophile en le décrivant comme le « prince
de la Renaissance malgache ». Les nombreux troubles suivant sa
disparition montreront d'ailleurs l'attachement populaire qu'avait pu
susciter ce roi après le règne oppressant de sa mère Ranavalona.</p>
